Questions & answers
Cyprus fishing FAQ
Short answers to the questions beginners ask most: licenses, spots, species, gear, seasons, rules, and safety.
Licenses & permits
Do I need a license to fish in Cyprus?
Freshwater fishing in reservoirs and dams needs a DFMR license. Normal sea fishing with a rod from shore usually does not. Spearfishing and boat fishing have separate rules.
How much does a freshwater license cost?
€35 per year for all dams where fishing is allowed, or €17 per year for one selected dam. The license is valid from 1 January to 31 December, regardless of the issue date.
How do I get a fishing license?
Apply or renew through CyLogin on the DFMR portal, then pay through JCC Smart. The license is personal: keep it with you and show it with your ID if requested.
Do I need a license for sea fishing?
A normal rod from shore is the no-license case. Spearfishing needs a license, and boat fishing depends on DFMR rules.
Spots & map
Where are the best fishing spots in Cyprus?
Can I get directions to a spot?
Yes. Each spot has an "Open in Google Maps" button with exact coordinates, so navigation takes you to the real location instead of the town center.
Are all reservoirs open for fishing?
No. Some are closed, seasonal, or catch-and-release only. Check the status badge and notes on each spot card before travelling.
Species & seasons
What fish can I catch in Cyprus?
Freshwater: largemouth bass, carp, trout, catfish, and more. Sea: sea bream, mullet, barracuda, and others. The fish wiki lists 50 species with methods and baits.
When is the best season to fish?
Spring and autumn are the most active for many species, especially predators on lures. Each fish page lists its own season.
Are there dangerous fish in Cyprus?
Yes. Lionfish, scorpionfish, greater weever, and silver-cheeked toadfish have venomous spines or toxic flesh. Each fish page flags toxicity and safe handling.
Gear & methods
What gear do I need to start?
A light spinning rod, reel, line, a few hooks and lures, plus basics. The gear guide has ready setups for reservoirs and shore fishing.
Rules & safety
What are the basic freshwater fishing rules?
Fish from shore only and in daylight — from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. No nets, chemicals, lights, hand lines, boats, or floating devices.
Can I keep every fish I catch?
Respect limits, minimum sizes, and protected species, and do not sell recreational catches. Release juveniles and fish you will not keep carefully: wet hands, minimal air time.
What if I accidentally catch a shark or ray?
Sharks and rays are not target species. If this bycatch happens accidentally, release the animal safely and as quickly as possible.
